School Gardens

At Dana Gray Elementary, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. The Hope Garden brings students outside to grow, explore, and connect with the natural world in a hands-on, meaningful way.

About the Hope Garden

HOPE stands for Hands On Plants Education — and that's exactly what our garden is all about. The Hope Garden serves students in grades 3, 4, and 5, building on the foundational gardening experiences introduced in the Rainbow Farm program at Redwood Elementary.

Our garden is a rich, fully equipped outdoor learning environment that includes:

  • A large kitchen classroom for the Harvest of the Month program
  • A greenhouse
  • Several raised garden beds
  • A spacious outdoor patio
  • A thriving orchard

Whether students are planting seeds, harvesting produce, preparing food in the kitchen classroom, or learning about where their food comes from, the Hope Garden offers experiences that connect science, nutrition, and nature in ways that truly stick.

Harvest of the Month

The Hope Garden is home to the Harvest of the Month program, a hands-on nutrition education initiative that introduces students to a different seasonal fruit or vegetable each month. Through tasting, cooking, and garden activities, students develop a deeper appreciation for fresh, healthy foods and where they come from.
